Finally, I spotted one of the band down below. I thought it was my Nanny, and ran down to her as fast as I could. But it wasn’t her. Then I ran farther down the meadow toward another one of my band members that I could see in the distance. This time it WAS my mom and I was so glad to see her after being lost for so long.

Backpacking in The Enchantments in Washington State, a rugged high country wilderness in the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest, where Mountain Goats are friendly and Alpine Larches light the landscape with golden autumn color.

The Enchantments is among the premier backpacking destinations in the Pacific Northwest, and is especially wonderful in autumn, when Alpine Larches are golden. This is part one of an account of a week-long hike into this high country of Mountain Goats, wilderness lakes, and granite peaks.

A day spent birdwatching for rare birds and seeing the hometown of Kurt Cobain.

Camping and hiking on Santa Cruz Island, part of Channel Islands National Park, gives people a chance to see the tiny Island Fox, view the Island Scrub-Jay (found nowhere else on earth), and camp on land that was part of a ranch for over a hundred years. The headlands overlooking the Pacific Ocean give a magnificent view toward the California coastline.

Observing the Snowy Owl invasion during the winter of 2011/2012 along the Washington State coast at Damon Point State Park, where I photographed several Snowy Owls.

Shi Shi Beach is a wilderness beach within Olympic National Park. It stretches over two miles in a gentle, sandy crescent, ending at the dramatic rocky sea stacks and arches of Point of Arches. We backpacked along the beach, and explored the tide pools of this exhilarating place.
